JC@LKBC: Launching Soon On 5 July 2023!

After months of preparation, Leng Kwang Baptist Church (LKBC) is gearing up for their first Jesus Club meeting on 5 July 2023! We had a chat with Augustus, the pastor in charge of JC@LKBC, to find out more about LKBC’s journey towards starting a Jesus Club ministry.

1. How did LKBC decide to start a Jesus Club?

Growing up, I always had a heart for persons with intellectual disabilities (ID), and I always wondered if more could be done for them. I first heard about Jesus Club through Hannah, when we were classmates at Singapore Bible College. It was after I got to visit the club at Bethesda Frankel Estate Church (BFEC) that I came to find the ministry meaningful. It was also at that time when I realized that we have a number of church members who are working with persons with ID as their vocation, and that started us exploring ministry to persons with ID as a church.

2. Jesus Club Singapore aims to support churches to start ministries for adults with ID. How has Jesus Club Singapore helped you in your journey to start a JC at LKBC?

Nothing short of being intentional and helpful. From coming to speak in our church, to allowing us to be involved with JC@BFEC and with the process of running a club. This gave many of us, who are inexperienced, the confidence to know what to expect and to also move forward with intentional steps.

3. Quite a few LKBC members have visited JC@BFEC over the past year. What are some first impressions of JC?

I recalled someone sharing with me that she was tearing with joy when she participated in the worship segment. Though the singing and clapping were mostly not in sync, it impacted her a lot to realize that worship was more than music. The joy and enthusiasm of JC members as they worshipped God taught her that the heart of worship was beyond musicality. Many also shared how the members were so sincere in relating to one another, and how it was so encouraging to see how they can exercise their gifts by serving in the club as well.

4. If I’m reading this article and I’d like to help with the launch of JC@LKBC, how can I help?

We welcome you to join us in serving individuals with ID. At the moment, we are looking for individuals who are great at leading games and are able to support through giving the live talks. If not, please still come and join us so as to see how you may contribute help in small and faithful ways.

Additional plug from JC Singapore team: if you know any adult with ID living in the north, south, or central part of Singapore who may be keen to check out Jesus Club, do contact Augustus!
